The Success Factory..... Today's Tip
Summertime is the time of year most of us look forward to. Schedules
are more relaxed, the children are home our gardens and all the to-do
lists that didn't get done in the winter beckon us.
I am a morning person and have found that this is the time of day
when I do my best writing and am most effective with my phoning.
The other morning, however, I made some interesting observations
about my work habits that perhaps you can relate to.
Upon returning home after my daily early morning walk, I poured
myself a cup of coffee and began `putzing' around the house. I
watered the plants, which led to pulling a few weeds, which led to
pulling out a yard waste bag, which led to "Gee, this garage is sure
a mess…" You get the picture - my to-do list for the morning included
NONE of these things. I was planning on getting some tips written for
the week and before I knew it, it was 11 o'clock and time to get to
my doctor's appointment. I was thoroughly disgusted with myself and
knew that had I been working for an employer with a time clock, I
probably would have been fired.
What I have begun doing, especially on days when appointments chop up
my day, is to be even more specific with my daily to-do list. I am
now setting my list to a time schedule and making use of my kitchen
timer to keep myself on task. This is an old trick that I used when
my kiddos were smaller. They (and I) knew first thing in the morning
what the day would look like. That way, I got some things done with
my business and they knew that mommy was not going to be holed up in
her office for an undeterminable length of time.
Does this work every time? Of course not…working from home means
`life happens.' But does it help to keep me on task - absolutely.
I hope you'll give this a try if you are finding the summer months to
be a bit of a distraction.
