I've blogged today about the link Shel Horowitz at Frugal Marketing Tips added to his newsletter for Help a Reporter Out
Peter Shankman is a PR guy who is sending media queries out for reporters he knows. If you sign up for the service you'll get between 2 and 10 queries a day. Read them and if you EXACTLY fit the reporter's needs, go for it! You could get the coverage you're looking for.
Before you answer one, it's really important to make sure you are the perfect fit for the story and not pitch something you think is related. Building relationships with journalists is critical if you are doing PR and you can burn a contact if you try to "sell" something not requested.
In my blog 'll be reposting the queries I think best fit small or home-based businesses, are on women's issues, etc. If you don't want to sign up for Peter's service but don't want to miss a media opportunity, you can visit or sign up for my blog feed at http://nicolelascelle.wordpress.com.
If you need help or guidance in deciding if you should answer a request, I am happy to assist. Reviewing these queries will become part of the free PR class I'm offering.
Good luck! Hope some of you ladies get media coverage out of this!!
